Guess this lockdown has been a revelation with kids indulging in loads of art and crafts to keep themselves occupied. So, we wanted to do a child friendly project at home and using only the materials and tools that were already available with us. And that is how this DIY lamp with card board and craft paper happened. While you are at it, do check out our DIY Page for other lamp DIY projects.

Things you required

Decided to keep this a simple project. The only things you need are :
  • Card board
  • Craft Paper
  • Pair of Scissors
  • Glue

This is a very simple DIY project. Given the Covid 19 lock down situation, I had tried to use whatever materials and tools that I had inside my home. It meant not having to use power tools or clamps which would have made this project a breeze through. Nonetheless, this is still an easy project for you to try at home.

This is also child friendly project and you can encourage your kids in their early teens to try it out with moderate supervision.

All that you need are :

  • Teak wood beading strips from your local plywood store
  • A simple hacksaw blade
  • Wood Adhesive
  • A bulb holder and cable for the lighting unit
  • Parchment paper / photo sheet for light diffusion
  • Fabric or handmade paper
  • And a tinge of your creativity to do a bit of your own art

Check out the step by step process in the below video :

Do subscribe to our Youtube channel where we intend to do more of these DIY lamp / Lampshade series. You can check out the first video here where we show you how to make an industrial style lampshade.

Do give this one a shot and let us know your honest feedback on how we can improve.

This is our first Do it Yourself project in our upcoming Lampshade DIY series. We were waiting for the lockdown to be over, but thought will give it a start with the things available at home.

This is a simple project you can easily make in less than 15 minutes.

All that you need are

  • A Pair of lampshade rings (You can buy them here). You can rip off fabric from an exiting lampshade and use the rings from it. Or you can use embroidery hoops, or rings used for making dream catcher.
  • Cable ties. Threads, twines or jute can also be used.
  • Green Garden Mesh. Available in all local hardware stores for a good Rs.15 to 25 per square foot.
  • A small cutting plier
The process in explained in the video below:

You need to give the shade a coat of spray paint to give it a more clean and complete look. Once done you can also don your creative cap and work further on it to give it more bling and life.

Try it out and let us know what you think of this simple DIY project.

Like any other item in your home, lampshades are also likely to get worn out with accumulation of dust, cobwebs, lint, pet hair and more. All these surface particles gather up and over a period of time tend to dull the sheen and look of the lampshade. Knowing how to clean them can be handy when you want to get your fabric lampshades sparkling again.

Take precaution : As a precaution it is better to remove the lampshade from either the lamp or from its hanging unit before cleaning.

Removing accumulated surface particles on the lampshade

Before anything make sure your hands are clean and absolutely dry.

  • Clean cloth : Use a clean cotton cloth to dust off the  fabric to remove off any dust / lint particles. Use rapid vertical motion to knock off the particles. Avoid applying any pressure using the cloth onto the shade. You do not want to give dirt a permanent place in your shade.
  • Hair Dryer : You can also use a blower / hair dryer (set to release cool air) to quickly remove dust and complement it with dry cloth dusting.
  • Paint brush : Use a clean painting brush (Preferably about 1-2 inch thick bristles) on lampshades with textured fabric like jute or raw silk or some linen cloth. Brush off the dust with gentle motion of the brush. You can complement it with a hair dryer.
  • Avoid moisture : Avoid using moist or damp cloth on fabric lampshades. Most shades use glue to hold the fabric in place and moisture might weaken the strength of the glue. If you must, use a mildly damp cloth and wipe off the surface gently and uniformly. You also need to remember to not leave any damp spot which after drying might leave a different coloured patch on that part the fabric.

Cleaning the inside of a lampshade

All hard lampshades come with a plastic sheet layer inside. You can use a wet cloth to wipe off the dust inside and then follow it up by cleaning with a dry and clean cloth. The inside layer is just as prone to dust accumulation as the fabric that is outside.

You need to clean the metal frames too that are visible on the inside of the shade. Just wipe it off with a dry cloth.

How to remove persistent stains ?

A finger print. Or a pen mark. a coffee stain. A paint spill. What do we do ? Particularly an eye sore if it is on a white or other light coloured shades. Wish we have a clear answer to this question. While there could be ways to remove the stains it may not be without making the after effect look worse than before.

A stain remover might do the job well. But might leave the spot with an effect of dampness after drying. One needs to tread this with caution as it should not shift from being bad to worse.

In most cases here, we recommend that you do not introduce any foreign element to the fabric on the lampshade. We do not know how they would react and what kind of mark they would leave. We always suggest that you change the position of the lampshade so that the stained portion is not visible. Not the best of options... But may be your best bet given the choices you may have.

Rust formation on the fabric

This will happen mostly on the top and bottom rim of the lampshades because the frames would have not be painted properly. The metal inside is reacting and is pushing the rust from beneath. There is nothing much that you can do here as the rust is working its way up from beneath the fabric. Rust formation eventually is going to be a permanent problem. Use the shade for as long as you can before you can get a replacement.

A word of advice that is redundant : Not everything on a lampshade can be removed. So it is always better to avoid spills and stains and pen marks on them. Worst case scenario is to have your lampshades changed and it is a low cost replacement depending on whether you go for offtheshelf shades or want to get one custom made.

A request to the reader : Have you successfully removed persistent stains from your lampshades ? What method did you use. You can leave a comment and we will update our post with due credits to you.

We don't sell our lampshades with bulbs / lamps... Both in the retail outlet as well as when we sell it online. And so, we are always asked, "What bulb should I be using. Can you please recommend ?". We always tell them what options are available, and what their pros and cons are and allow the customers to decide. Sometimes we just tell them what they need to buy and they do it. Here's is what we tell them and this you can also use to decide what best suits your need for the lamp you are using / purchasing.

We just saw recently about the three types of bulb holders that are available. In this post we shall look at the types of bulbs available and what is out recommendation for you.

The tungsten / incandascent bulb

The traditional one. Been used from time immemorial. I remember, as a child, we used to have 100 watts bulb. But luckily, I only find the 40 watts and 60 watts ones which is also rare given that people have moved to alternatives.

Strictly, we do not recommend these bulbs. The usual reasons - Not energy efficient and generate a lot of heat. Try turing on a 40 watts bulb and sit next to it for 10 minutes. You will start sweating crazy from the heat. Switch it off and try touching it after 5 mins. It would still be super hot.
  • Price : About 15 to 20 Rs
  • Warranty : No

So keep away. There is no second thoughts on it. Which leaves the competition between the other two types of bulbs.

CFL / Compact Flourescent Light

I really do not know the technicalities behind the design of the bulb or how it works in giving energy efficient results. But it certainly is recommended for your lighting needs when you are conscious about enery efficiency. One of the advantages of the CFLs is that they have a wider angle of distribution of light which allows for the light to cover the entire parts of the lampshade that are above and below the bulb. While LEDs are more energy efficient, we recommend CFLs for narrower shades - Shades that are about 6inches or lesser in diameter. This is because the CFL allows for almost equal amount of illuminating in the parts above and below it.

Does it heat up too ? Yes it does. But much less compared to the tungsten lamp. Light up a CFL for a while and turn it off. You can see feel the (moderately low) heat for a good 30 to 40 seconds after it is switched off.
  • Price : About 110-160 Rs
  • Warranty : Usually the electrical shops give a one year warranty. They will write the date of purchase on the bulb and you can take it back to them if it stops working within a year
  • Recommended Wattage : 11 Watts to 15 watts for sufficient lighting in a living room.
  • Compatibility with bulb holder : Available for B22, E14 and E27 bulb holders
  • Our recommendation : Go for it for narrower lampshades. For all other practical purposes, read on.

LED / Light Emiting Diode Lights

Most energy efficient. Again, am not qualified enough to quantify the efficiency it brings in, but most certainly works much better than the other two, in terms of electricity savings in a year. We see it evidently in our showroom where we use LEDs (about 15 of them which are on at the same time for about 4 hours every day) and the bimonthly bill does not really bit our pockets.

Here's a simple test. Turn on an LED bulb for lets say about an hour. Try touching the bulb with your finger while it is still on. You will be able to comfortably touch it much unlike the case of CFLs and tungstens.

Only drawback though : They come with a plastic attachment in the bottom which does not allow for a wider angle of light spread. This is why we do not recommend them for narrow shades. When used in them, the part of the shade about the bulb will be bright, while the part of the shade below the plastic covering will be dark. You may not have this problem with wider shades.
  • Price : 150-210 Rs
  • Warranty : Similar to CFls
  • Recommended wattage : 8-11 watts for sufficient lighting in a living room. You can reduce the wattage if you are looking to use as night shades.
  • Compatibility with bulb holder : Available for B22, E14 and E27 bulb holders
  • Our recommendation : Always go for LEDs when you have wider shades. Or if the lesser angle of light spread is not a problem, just go for LEDs always.

What colour lamp should I go for

For lampshades, we always always always and always recommend the yellow lamps. This is because the yellow lamps give a very warm effect to your ambience and the patterns and textures on the fabric shades also light up beautifully under the yellow lamps. If you have a shade that would cast shadows on the wall, yellow lamps are your best choice because whites will not do that trick for you.

But be careful while buying. Because the yellow colur lamps are called WARM WHITEs which can be a little confusing. The White coloured lamps are COOL WHITEs. While this is our strong recommendation, choice of colour is subjective and we have seen customers go with COOL WHITE and some with even RED and ORANGE coloured LED Lamps. Use our recommendation as a  guideline and but always pay heed to your personal tastes.

Hope this will help you a bit with choosing the kind of bulb that you may want to have for your lamps. Do leave a comment and let us know if you found this post useful.

For all those that have an existing lamp base and are looking at buying a lampshade for it, this will be a very useful information. Before buying a shade for your existing lamp base, it is important to understand if the lampshade that you are buying will work with the lamp holder that you currently have. In almost all cases in India, a lampshade is fixed onto a lampbase by seating the shade holder ring onto the bulb / lamp holder and tightening it in place with a threaded screw that comes with the holder. Buying the wrong kind of shade would mean that your shade holder ring is too small that it does not fit into the holder or it is too big that it does not tightly fit into the holder.

Predominantly there are three types of lamp / bulb holders that are in use here in India :

Edison screw type holder (E27)

The E27 is the biggest of the holders that is in use and from what we have experienced, is being used prominently in all parts of India except south (where the traditional pin type holders are in use "most of the time". As the name suggests, the holder comes with the threaded socket and the bulb comes with threads. The bulb is fit into the lamp holder socket by screwing the bulb into the socket through the threads.

For your lampshade to work with the holder, the lampshade holder inner ring should be atleast 41mm in diameter.

If you buy a lampshade that has a holder ring smaller in diameter than 41mm, it will not fit the holder.

Solution in case you do not want to return the lampshade : Change the bulb holder from E27 to E14 or B22 depending on what is the diameter of the holder ring. What are these E14 and B22 holders ? Continue reading to know more.

Small Edison screw type holder (E14)

This is very similar to the E27 holder, with the only difference that it is smaller in diameter. The E14 holder sockets are small in diameter and the bulbs themselves will have smaller threads that enable screwing in to the socket.

In the case of E14, the lampshade holder inner ring should be 27-28mm in diameter.

What if you have bought a lampshade with holder ring that supports E27 holder ? Fret not.

Solution : E27 to E14 adapters or converters are available in nylon and plastic. It is only a question of fixing the adapter into the 41mm holder ring to make it smaller to support E14 holders. Without hesitating, request your lampshade vendor to provide the adapter so that your lampshade can be used with your existing lamp base and holder. The Other option, is to change the bulb holder to E27.

B22 Pin type holder (B22)

If you notice, this is the most common type of holder that has been in use in India. The bulb comes with two pins and is inserted into the holder by pressing it in and turning it to lock it in place with the pins. These holders that are used on table lamps and floor lamps with me 100% of the time made of brass which makes it easier for you to identify.

Also, If you notice, the not so fancy white plastic holders that we use on our walls are mostly the B22 type holders. We would bet our bottom dollar on the fact that these types of holders would be used in almost every household in India. Just walk around your  home, and am sure at least one of your wall fitting comes with B22 holders.

Now the important point. Your lampshade holder inner ring should be 25mm in diameter for the shade to snugly fit into the holder.

If in case your shade ring is meant for B22 and you have E14 or E27 holder, there is no two ways about it - You either have to change the holder to B22 or request your lampshade vendor for a replacement.

So before you buy your lampshade for an existing lamp, check the lamp for the holder in use and check with your vendor to ensure he is sending you a lampshade that will fit into your lampshade. E27, E14 and B22 - Just these and they can be easily identified. Just remember  - Wide thread is E27, Narrow thread is E17 and No thread is B22.

By the way, can you really paint on a lampshade ?

In short, the answer to that question is a resounding YES.

Art is always a great way to express one self and to give outlet to ones creative drive. At Woodooz, we think of our lampshades as a work of art and that helps us understand the joy of creating and nurturing it. While art or painting or sketch on a lampshade has been here for quite a while, we as lampshade makers want to hightlight and encourage artists to explore this medium on an extensive basis for giving wings to there artistic talent. A lampshade is no different from the other media that you may have been used to work on - A canvas or fabric or a wooden surface or MPF or bottles or any other surface for that matter.

Most lampshades are made with fabric which makes them a perfect surface for painting.

Who would want to paint on a lampshade ?

You actually do not need a specific reason to paint on a lampshade. It is art much like what you would indulge on a piece of canvas which eventually hangs and adorns a wall in your home. So if you love exploring art, Lampshades can be a unique and different medium to try your artistic hands at and that piece of art can be a sure shot conversation starter at your home. Laying in one corner of your room, lighting up and speaking a story that is yours and told through your art. Art for art sake. To revel in the joy that comes out of that art. For no reasons other than these two.

Remember. These can be a great gift to your loved ones.

Painting on a lampshade can also exist for commercial reasons. Small businesses whose foundations are laid on art and products based on art can use lampshades to offer a new, unique and customized range of products to their customers. The piece of art can be standard and generic and can appeal to a larger audience or can be specific and personalized to cater to individual requirements and need. Either way, the lampshades become a unique product offering, their uniqueness stemming out of the artistic feat that is truly and completely exclusive to the artist.

What kind of paint can be used on fabric lampshade ?

A whole lot of different kinds of paints can be used on fabric lampshades. If we leave out the fact that they are lampshades, they are essentially fabric or paper on which people have been known to paint on for ages. The below list is based on our own experience working on painted lampshades and also based on inputs from artists who use our lampshades for their commercial products or for their personal use. While we do have photos to support the claim, we are not at liberty to post other people's work and so shall limit the images to our own experiments.

Acrylic and fabric paint
  • They work really well with fabrics as you would already know. Just one word of caution here : Soft lampshades are made of fabric and hard ones have a layer of plastic inside the fabric. In the latter case, they may be a layer of glue beneath and adding too much of sogginess might weaken the glue structure which you will want to avoid.

PVC paints
  • These are typically used for screen printing. But also are great set of paints to use on your fabric lampshades.

Acrylic Spray paints
  • If you are into stenciling, acrylic spray paints are a really quick way to get your work of art done. They allow for faster drying and an even distribution of paint that makes the finish look so seamless and printlike.
One quick tip on using spray paints (Maybe will cover this as a separate detailed post also) : Make sure you place the stencil to lay as much as possible on the lampshade surface. Given that it may be curved, it becomes important to keep it flat. Use painter's tape / masking tape to stick the stencil onto the shade. STRICTLY AVOID PACKING TAPE. Also, cover a a considerable amount of the shade outside of the stencil with painter's tape. Remeber, spray paint needs to be sprayed evenly at about 8-10 inches away and so the paint is likely to stray outside the stencil. To be on the safer side, cover 6 inches of the shade with painter's tape on all sides of the stencil.

Sharpies and sketch pens
  • Not the painting type ? Love doodling and sketching. That goes well with shades too. If you have not tried it, it is about time that you do a mandala art or warli or just about any of the things that you always doodle on paper. You can have it by your bedside and take pride in it everyday.

What is the ideal lampshade to paint on ?

What is ideal is based on what you have and not have. You can paint on lampshades that are already at home. If you have a lampbase and looking to crown it with your work of art, you can go for a suitable lampshade that fits your base. Drum or conical ? You can look it up here. You can also go for standalone table lamps or hanging lamps in case you do not have any base.

Have you ever painted on a lampshade ? Do tell us more about it. What kind of paint did you use. What type of material did you work on. We would love to hear your side of the story too and would love to feature them on the blog here.

Black as a lampshade, in our opinion and based on our interactions with our clients, has always been under rated and least preferred. The general idea of associating black with darkness goes against the common functionality of a lampshade which is to diffuse and allow muted light. That said, the usual belief is that black will completely block the light and so does not work well as a lampshade. We would want to use this post as an opportunity to bust that thought and highlight how beautiful a black shade can be if it can be placed appropriately in your setting.

Much like any other color, black is also a choice based on your requirement. When you want subtlety and do not want light to overpower your room, black becomes a good choice. Depending on the choice of fabric used, the shade can diffuse different levels of light through it. A thick and opaque fabric can suppress almost all the light through it and so the diffusion of light will only be through the top and bottom of the shade. We in Woodooz Home Decor use fine quality cotton fabric for our black shades which allows for certain amount of light to pass through it, though it may be about 30 to 40% lesser than the lighter hued ones.

In short, if you do not want to draw much attention to the lamp, if you do not want too much light in the room, if you love the subdued and muted ambiance that is just perfect for low light activities like quiet dinners or movie nights, black is certainly your color.

The other added advantage with black is that it complements most other colors and so becomes a good fit for all types of wall colors and decor. If in one end of the spectrum offwhite is everyone's favorite choice, in the other end it is black.

Whenver we come across a requirement, we never hesitate to recommend black. And we ask our customers never to hesitate going with black. End of the day, if gives your space a whole new dimension.

Do you have a black lampshade ? What are your thoughts about it ? We at Woodooz Home Decor would love to know about it. Leave us a comment.

Choosing the right kind of shade for your table lamp or floor lamp can always be a challenge. Particularly if you do not have the shades physically available for trials before you can choose. The wrong shade dimension can make the entire lamp look odd or not so pleasing to the eyes which makes it important for you to take a calculated decision. In this post, we try to simplify the pointers that you can use to decide the right shape and dimension of the lampshade for your lamps. In this post we look at the two most popular shades - The drum lampshade and the conical lampshade.

Note : This post focusses on cirular shades specifically for circular bases. May not work well for square or rectangular bases.

When to choose drum lampshade

Have a tall lamp ? A tripod Lamp ? A sleek and slender floor standing lamp ?

Go for the drum lampshade. Drum shades of a particular diameter look much much bigger than a conical lampshade of the same base dimension and hence create the perception of bigger size which is essential when trying to complement a tall lamp. Floor lamps also need to make their presence felt from one corner of the room for which drum lampshades work the best. While choosing drum, it is also important to choose the correct dimension so that it does not look out of place with your lamp.

Here's a guideline that you can follow to choose your drum lampshade for your floor lamps :
  • Height of the lamp should be approximately 3 to 3.5 times the diameter of the lampshade.
  • So if your lamp is 48 inches tall, you can go for a 14 inches dia lampshade
  • If your lamp is 36 inches tall, you can go for a 12 inches dia lampshade
  • 16 inches and 18 inches work well with lamps that are more than 4 feet tall.
Some exceptions though :

If you have a lamp with just a slender single stem rising from a wooden or metal base, conical shades would work well.

When to choose conical lampshade

We almost always recommend conical lampshades for the following lamp bases :
  • Small table lamp bases, wooden or metal
  • Bottle lamps
  • Vases used as lamps
The conical shades also help with wider diffusion of light enabling you to read books by the bed side. This is most cases, is what our users want their table lamps to do - make bed side reading easy.

Again the dimension also depends on the height and base diameter of the table lamp. The above lampshade bottom dia is 12 inches while the bottom dia of the blue shade below is 8 inches. The diamension was decided by the height of the lampbase.

Some pointers here :
  • Always make sure the bottom diameter of your lampshade is always wider than the diameter of the table lamp. Typically 1.5 times more than the base dia.
  • General thumb rule : Height of the lamp should be more than the base diameter of the lampshade
  • For regular bottles, go for conical shades that are about 10 inches wide in the bottom
  • Smaller bottles, 8 inches or 6 inches depending on the height of the bottle
  • Idea is to make sure the shade is proportional to the lamp base
Some exceptions though :
Drum lampshades work well with table lamps particularly when their base is wider. For example : A small and wide flower vase.

Personal choice and instincts always rule

While we have jotted down these points based on our own experience in making shades and also based on some of our customer feedback. These are only general guidelines when you do not have samples to test with your base before buying - Particularly when you buy online.

As shades are driven by personal taste, it is quite possible that you may want to deviate from these pointers to suit your specific needs. Eventually, it would work with your base and it should go with your decor sensibilities where, more than any guideline, your judgement and your personal choices would dictate what type of lampshade you should be buying. Lampshades add a lot of charm to your space and it is only right that you base the purchasing decision on some of these these guildelines and your own instincts. Trust us : Given that it is your space, your instincts in most times will always come in handy. Have fun planning the lampshade for your space.

Woodooz Home Decor Bottle Lamp Kit - The ultimate guide to the FAQs

Woodooz Home Decor has been a pioneer in bringing the Bottle Lamp Kits to its customers and here we are trying to answer some of the frequestly asked questions. Just to recap : The bottle lamp kit is an easy to use unit that allows for conversion of your bottles into beautiful table lamps. Here's some of the questions that we keep getting from our patrons and hoping this brings in clarity.

Who is the bottle lamp kit useful for ?

There are various folks who would find the bottle lamp kit ideal for their use. While their purpose of using the kit may vary, the kit itself serves the same purpose in all the cases which is to aid in converting bottles to lamps. Here are some target users for the kit :
  • Bottle decoupage artistes who want to make a functional lamp product out of their work
  • Home decor enthusiasts who look for unique ways to add lighting elements to their home
  • Bottle collectors who want to  preserve the memory of a bottle by giving it funtionality (We once had a customer who had the champagne bottle that her son brought home when he first came back from the army. She got it preserved as a lamp)
  • Folks with bar cabinets. The bottle lamps are a fitting and apt decor items when they sit on top of a bar cabinet.
  • And just about anyone else who have access to bottles and love bottle lamps

What all do I need to make a bottle lamp

  1. A bottle (duh !)
  2. Bottle Lamp kit and
  3. A Lampshade
  4. A bulb

I already have a lampshade. Will your kit work with it ?

Our bottle lamp kit comes with a B22 Bulb holder. The diameter of the holder ring in your lampshade should be roughly about 25mm for it to work with the kit.

All lampshades that you buy from us will be supported by the lamp kit.

Will it fit all bottles ?

Yes and no. The bottle lamp kit comes with a standard bottle cork stopper that is plugged into the bottle mouth before a lampshade is mounted on top of it. The bottle stopper has a tapered conical shape with the top diameter being larger than the bottom diameter

Top Diameter : 23mm
Bottom Diameter : 18 mm

So any bottle mouth opening that is anywhere between 18mm and 23mm in diameter works well with our lamp kit. Anything lesser than 18mm, the stopper will not go in, anything wider than 23mm, the stopper will completely go in and so will not stay sturdy.

What are the variants available ?

There are currently two variants available.
  • DIY Bottle lamp kit : This kit will come with the holder unit + bottle stopper and a black cable separately. This kit is primarily used when you already have a hole drilled in the bottle or you have the capability to drill the hole.  You need to insert the open end of the cable through the hole, route it through the hole in the bottom of the stopper and connect to the bulb holder. Fairly simple and not as complicated as it sounds.

  • Ready to use Bottle Lamp Kit : This kit will come with the holder unit + Bottle stopper + the cable - All connected. You just need to insert the stopper into the bottle and plug it in.

I have a painted / decoupaged bottle. Can I drill hole in it ?

We always suggest that the hole is drilled before any art work is done on the bottle. This is to ensure that the bottle art is not spoilt while in the process of drilling hole. In such cases, the ready to use kit will come in handy.

How are the kits priced ?

The bottle lamps kits are priced at Rs.380 for the ready to use kit and Rs.360 for the DIY kits. Shipping cost is extra and needs to be borne by the customer.

Do you offer discounts for the kits ?

Yes we do. For a minimum order quantity of 5 or more.  Get in touch with us to know more details.

How do I make the payments ?

You can GPAY the amount to 9884070470 and whatsapp your address to the same number. All kits are made to order and will take 2-3 days to ship from the time of order.

You can also pay through our website. Shipping cost is included and an additional convenience charge will apply.

If you think we have missed some questions, feel free to let us know through a whatsapp message (98840 70470). We will be happy to answer and add the question to this list.
